Culture is a useful concept in discussing human societies.
カルチャー(文化)は役に立つ概念だよ、人間の社会について論ずるときにね。
One of the common definitions is that
（文化についての）一般的な定義の一つには以下のようなものがある、
culture is a set of essential features of a people
文化とは、ある人々に不可欠な諸特徴の集まり(set)である
belonging to a particular social group, ethnic group,or country
特定の、社会集団や民族集団や国家に属している人々
-features that can include -その特徴にはthat以下のようなものがあるよ
their customs, language, attitudes, social institutions, values, and practices.
習慣、言語、生活態度、社会制度、価値観、風習
This refers to what is also called 'large culture.'
これ（カルチャー）は、「ラージ・カルチャー」とも呼ばれるものでもあるよ。
Such a definition, however, has inherent problems.
しかしながら、そうした定義には、つきものの問題がいくつかあるよ。
One problem arises from a lack of consensus
その中の一つ（の問題）は、統一見解がないことから生じるよ
about the exact quality and quantity of essential features
あの不可欠な諸特徴についての、厳密な質と量に関して（の統一見解）
a person must possess to belong.
ある人間が（ある文化に）所属するためにはもっていなければならない（諸特徴）。
As a consequence, large culture membership may be officially determined,
そのため、場合によっては（mustを意識して訳す）、
ラージ・カルチャーの構成員資格が公式に決められるかもしれない
for example, according to whether a person holds a particular passport.
たとえば、当該人物が特別な許可証をもっているかどうか（によって）とか。
However, in many cases, しかし、多くの場合、
such ways of determining large culture membership are unofficial,
そうした、ラージ・カルチャーの構成員資格を決める方法は正式には存在しない
for instance, when large culture pertains to a person's social group membership.
たとえば、ラージ・カルチャーがその人物の社会集団構成員資格にかかわるとき。
The consequences of this lack of clarity are evident
このように、はっきりと方法が決まっていないために、結果は明白だ
when one considers people of Japanese ethnicity
living in Hawaii, Brazil, or California.
ハワイやブラジルやカリフォルニアに暮らす日系人について考えるとき。
They could count themselves as belonging to the Japanese culture,
彼らはなんなら、自分たちを日本文化に属している者と考えてもいいだろう
while others may more officially exclude them
しかし、彼らをもっとはっきりとした形で排除する者もでるだろう
as they live outside of Japan
彼らが日本に住んでいないからだ
and may not meet official criteria
また、彼らが公式の基準に合わないかもしれないからだ
that are employed for determining who exactly is Japanese.
どんな人間が厳密に日本人であるかを決めるために採用されている公式の基準に。
