The process of abstraction in conceptualizing culture is not a problem in itself.
文化（カルチャー）を概念化するときの抽象化の過程それ自体には問題はない。
As human beings, we naturally tend to group things together using abstract categories
私たち人間は生まれつき抽象的な区分（法）を用いてものごとを分類するようにできている。
-in fact, the development of language relies on this process.
実際、言語が発達したのもこの抽象化の過程を踏んできたからである。
The problem occurs, however,
しかし、それでも問題は起きるのだ
when we forget that particular concepts like European race or Japanese culture
are only abstractions.
西洋人とか日本文化とかいう、特定の概念は抽象化（の産物）に過ぎないということを忘れると
If we see these abstract ideas as concrete realities,
もし、私たちがこれらの抽象的な観念を具体的な現実だと見誤ると、
we could end up depersonalizing the members
we have mentally assigned to a particular group.
その人たちから個性を剥奪することになるだろう。この人は、ああした集団の人だなどと勝手に思い込み。
Serious social issues
such as racism-and consequent maltreatment or abuse--could follow.
人種差別のような深刻な社会問題、そして、その結果として虐待が起こるかもしれない。
For example, ethnic minorities tend to be excluded from work-related promotion
たとえば、少数民族の人は仕事上の出世から除外される傾向がある
because some people perceive them in terms of stereotypes,
彼らを既成概念に照らして、
and automatically assign them negative qualities
such as being ''too emotional" or ''too inflexible."
「感情的になりすぎる」とか「融通が利かない」などといった
否定的な資質を彼らに無意識のうちに当てはめるからだ。
