The word 'history' has two senses「歴史」という言葉には2つの意味がある
: what happened in the past, ：過去に起こったこと（という意味）
and what we say in the present about what happened in the past.
と過去に起こったことについて、私たちが現在までに採用するに至った解釈（という意味）である。
In the first sense, 前者の意味において、
history as past events is imagined as a country
過去の出来事としての歴史は、なにか国のようなものと思われている。
stretched out 'behind' us
私たちの「背後で」遠くまでひろがっている（国）、
which we could visit if only we had a time-travel machine
タイムマシーンさえあれば訪問できるような（国）
History as the surmises, interpretations and narratives constructed today is based on what those past events left for us

今では（いくつものピースが欠けていて）完成することのないジグソーパズルという意味の歴史を通してしか近づくことはできない。
