「英語の倒置」は語句を入れ替えることではありませんよ

①②の英文を説明してください。
The largest of his ships was named for the mother of the Christian savior. In his journal, which begins in the form of a prayer, "In the Name of Our Lord Jesus Christ," Columbus writes of standards bearing the cross brought onto the lands he was soon to conquer. ①Less well known are the men who sailed with Columbus who did not call this symbol their own. ②No less than America would be, Europe at the time was a place endlessly conflicting over its multi-religious past.
コロンブスの船団のなかで一番大きい船にはキリスト教の救世主の母の名がつけられていた。
彼の航海日誌は，「主イエス・キリストの名のもとに」という祈りの形で始まっているのだが，コロンブスは，（彼がまもなく征服することになる）大陸に持って来た，十字架（の紋章）の旗について書いている。①②

①について、
Less well known are the men who sailed with Columbus who did not call this symbol their own.
whoが2回出てくるが、もうひとつ倒置という操作が行われている。

まず、
倒置（強調したいところを文頭にもっていくこと）する前の「文」に戻すと、
The men (who sailed with Columbus) (who did not call this symbol their own) are less well known.となる。
（　）部分を２つ除けば、
The men are less well known.
「その男たちは・・・ほどは知られていない。」にすぎない。

次に、
先行詞 the menを (who A ) (who B )が二重に修飾していると考える。
「（Ａした）the menの中で（Ｂした）the menは・・・・・」と訳そう。
「コロンブスと一緒に航海した男たちの中で、このシンボル（＝十字架）を自分たちのものと呼ばなかった男たちのことは、前者（紋章旗）ほどは知られていない。」

倒置について

「程度の表現less well known」を文頭にもっていくと、
The men (who sailed with Columbus) (who did not call this symbol their own) are less well known.が
Less well known the men (who sailed with Columbus) (who did not call this symbol their own) are.となる。
そのお詫びとして、areを主語the menの前に出すのだ、と思おう。

倒置のルール：
[ I am so.]はsoを前に出して、さらに、amを主語の前に出す行程を経て
[So am I.]になる。

そういうわけで、完成品はこうなる。
Less well known are the men (who sailed with Columbus) (who did not call this symbol their own).




②も倒置
No less than America would be, Europe at the time was a place endlessly conflicting over its multi-religious past.
Europe以下は、「当時のヨーロッパは，様々な宗教的過去をめぐって絶えず衝突している場所であった。」

No less than America would beだが、
No less than America が主語のわけがないし、be以下がないのもおかしい。

Europe would be no less than Americaが、元の文である。
「ヨーロッパはアメリカに劣っていなかった。」
Europeが省略されているのだ。
no less than America を文頭に出して、wouldを主語Europeの前に出せば完成。

No less than America would be,
Europe at the time was a place endlessly conflicting over its multi-religious past.
「ヨーロッパはアメリカに劣らず(or同様に)、
当時のヨーロッパは、様々な宗教的過去をめぐって絶えず衝突している場所であった。」
wouldは「過去の能力」を意味するだろうが、和訳に反映させにくい。
