The environment is arguably an invention of our imagination. What we know from experience of much of the world, moreover, is related to us through stories, conventions, and ideas that we learn from other people. Processes and transitions are captured in conceptual terms that are fundamentally symbolic and abstract. This is as true for modem urban residents as it is for forest-dwelling agriculturists, perhaps more so. Ideas about nature inevitably reflect our social world. This is the basic claim of constructivism.
環境という概念は、おそらく私たちの想像力の賜物だろう。もっと言えば、世界から私たちがせいぜい頑張って知りえたことも、すべて、先人たちが作り上げた物語、慣習、および思想の助けを借りないと 私たちの身に関連づけることはできない。（環境の）変化が何を意味するかは、概念的な用語を使わないと説明できない。環境という概念はもともと象徴的で抽象的だ。この危うさは、森林に住む農民にとっても、現代の都市住民にとってもどちらにも当てはまる。自然についての考え方は、どうしても私たちが今住んでいる社会しか反映していないからだ。これがコンストラティズム構成主義の眼目となる主張だ。
