In order to freeze movement and help eliminate camera shake, wildlife photographers usually photograph birds at high shutter speeds exacerbated by long lenses.
There is no single correct shutter speed for freezing the action; it will depend on how fast the subject is moving.Generally, smaller birds move a lot more quickly and erratically than larger birds. Even when perched and considered static,a bird will make small but very fast, sharp and jerky movements, so remain on guard.
Larger birds are often slower and move more predictably. Don’t be caught out though, they can also take a turn of speed too, especially raptors.
As a starting point, aim for a shutter speed of at least 1/2500sec for a bird in flight and 1/800sec
for a static subject.Understanding how shutter speed can make or break a bird photograph is essential knowledge. With practice, persistence and a fair amount of trial and error you’ll quickly learn how to determine shutter speeds for the species you are photographing.
